What is Bhai Dooj, and when is it in 2026?

Bhai Dooj is the day brothers and sisters celebrate each other, and it closes the five days of Diwali. It falls two days after Lakshmi Puja, on the second day (dooj) of the bright fortnight of Kartik. In 2026 it's on or around Wednesday 11 November. Some local calendars put it a day earlier, so check yours or ask whoever in the family keeps the panchang.

The ritual is simple. The sister prepares a thali with roli, rice, a diya and sweets, puts a tilak on her brother's forehead, prays for his long life and feeds him something sweet. The brother gives her a gift, and in most families promises to look out for her. Many families add a meal together, and in practice it's often cousins and every sibling in the house taking turns.

The story behind it

The most told version is about Yamuna and her brother Yama, the god of death. He visited her on this day after a long time away; she welcomed him with a tilak, a meal and her company, and he was so touched that he blessed every brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day with a long life. That's why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya, and why the prayer at its heart is for the brother's long life rather than for luck or wealth.

Bhai Dooj, Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta, Bhai Tika

The same day has different names across India and beyond. It's Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, and Bhai Tika in Nepal, where it ends the festival of Tihar and the tika is famously colourful. If your sibling calls it by one of those names, use it in your message: it shows you know how your family marks the day.

How is it different from Raksha Bandhan?

Both celebrate brothers and sisters, but they come at it from opposite sides. On Raksha Bandhan, in August, the sister ties a rakhi and the brother promises to protect her. On Bhai Dooj, the sister prays for her brother's long life with a tilak. So a Raksha Bandhan message is about looking out for each other, and a Bhai Dooj message is more of a blessing. In practice families treat both as a day to be together, and the same jokes about gifts turn up on both.

What do you write in a Bhai Dooj message?

A blessing, one real detail, and warmth. The blessing is the festival's own: long life, good health, a good year. The detail is what makes it yours: the cycle he fixed, the time she covered for you, the fights over the remote. "Happy Bhai Dooj to the brother who fixed my cycle, my laptop and more than one bad day" works because only one family could have sent it.

Siblings talk in teasing, so a funny line is almost always welcome. Just end on something sincere. For an elder brother or sister, say bhaiya or didi and use aap in Hinglish and Hindi; for a younger one, chhote or chhoti is warmer than their name.

Cousins count. In many families the cousins you grew up with are as much brother and sister as anyone, and a Bhai Dooj message to a cousin who didn't expect one lands especially well. The same goes for a sister-in-law or brother-in-law you're close to: the family lines work for them with the name changed.

What if you're not together this year?

More and more siblings aren't, and the festival has adapted: a video call at tilak time, sweets delivered to the door, the gift sent a few days ahead. Say you miss the ritual and make a promise for next year. "No tilak this year, just a long call and a promise: next Bhai Dooj, we're in the same room" says both. Time the message for the morning, before the day fills up, and call in the evening.

Is it too late to wish Bhai Dooj?

Not for a day or two. Own the delay in a few words and get to the wish: "A day late, but the prayer is the same." Brothers and sisters forgive lateness far more easily than silence, especially if the message comes with a call.
