When is Christmas 2026?

Christmas Day is 25 December, a Friday in 2026, and Christmas Eve is the night before. For Christians it celebrates the birth of Jesus; for many more people around the world it's simply the biggest family holiday of the year, with a tree, presents, a long meal and a week of slowing down before New Year.

In India, Christmas is a public holiday, often called Bada Din, the big day. Churches hold midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and the celebrations are biggest in Goa, Kerala, the Northeast and cities like Mumbai and Kolkata, but plum cake, stars on balconies and Secret Santa at the office have spread everywhere. What do you write in a Christmas message?

One real thing and one good wish. The real thing is a memory, a thank-you or a detail only you would know: the cookie fights, the lights they untangle, the year they got through. The wish is for something specific rather than general joy: rest, a calm new year, the thing they're hoping for. "Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad. Every good Christmas memory I have has the two of you in it" says more than any verse inside a shop-bought card.

Length depends on where it's going. A text or a WhatsApp message can be one or two lines. A card can hold three or four sentences and a memory. A family group chat wants something short and warm that everyone can reply to with a heart.

For family and a partner

Family messages can lean on tradition: the recipes, the arguments over the last cookie, the way the house smells on the 25th. Grandparents especially love to be told that their Christmas is the one you remember. For a partner, say what this Christmas means because they're in it. The funny version works too; untangling the lights is a genuine act of love.

Christmas messages for clients and coworkers

Keep them short, warm and sent before the break, ideally in the week before Christmas, when people are still reading email. Thank clients for the year and wish them a restful holiday. For a team, thank them for something specific and tell them to switch off properly. If you don't know whether someone celebrates Christmas, "Season's greetings" or "Happy holidays" is the inclusive choice, and nobody minds receiving it.

Religious or not?

Both are right, depending on who's reading. For friends and family who share your faith, a Christmas blessing ("wishing you the peace and joy of Christ") is the heart of the season. And if you missed the day, the week between Christmas and New Year is forgiving: a late "Merry Christmas" that rolls into "and a happy New Year" is as natural as the on-time one.

When you're not home for Christmas

Send the message on Christmas morning, their time, before the day gets busy, then call when they're at the table so the phone can go round. Picture yourself there, in the kitchen or by the tree, rather than simply saying you miss them. A photo of your own small Christmas wherever you are is a lovely thing to send back. If a parcel is on its way, say so in the message; knowing a gift is coming is half the fun of it.

Cards, captions, gift tags and Secret Santa

Card lines can be a little more formal and are often read aloud, so keep them simple. Captions work best short and about the people in the photo. Gift tags need five to ten words and a smile. For Secret Santa, a line that hints at who you are, without giving it away, is half the fun. Many people send one message for both holidays, "Merry Christmas and a happy New Year", which is perfect for cards that arrive in the last week of December.

Christmas wishes in Hindi

"क्रिसमस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ" is the standard warm wish, and "मेरी क्रिसमस" is simply Merry Christmas written in Devanagari. In Hinglish, "Merry Christmas! Aapka ghar khushiyon se bhara rahe" suits elders and the family next door, and friends will enjoy something cheekier about who's bringing the cake.
