What is Diwali, and when is it in 2026?

Diwali, or Deepawali, is the Festival of Lights: a row (avali) of lamps (deep). It's celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Newar Buddhists, and is one of the biggest festivals in India. It falls in the Hindu month of Kartik, on the new-moon night (amavasya), which puts it in October or November. In 2026, the main day, Lakshmi Puja, is Sunday 8 November.

Diwali is really five days. It starts with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November in 2026, when many families buy gold, silver or new utensils for luck. Then comes Naraka Chaturdashi, or Choti Diwali, then Lakshmi Puja, when homes are cleaned, lit with diyas and decorated with rangoli, and the goddess of wealth is worshipped in the evening. Govardhan Puja follows, and the festival ends with Bhai Dooj, when sisters put a tilak on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life. Local calendars can put those last two a day apart, so check yours.

What does Diwali celebrate?

The victory of light over darkness, and of good over evil, told through different stories in different places. In north India it marks Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years in exile, and the lamps lit to welcome him home. In much of south India, Deepavali marks Lord Krishna's defeat of the demon Narakasura, and the main celebration is often in the early morning of Naraka Chaturdashi. In Bengal and eastern India, the same night is Kali Puja.

For Sikhs, the day is Bandi Chhor Divas, which remembers Guru Hargobind's release from imprisonment in Gwalior Fort; the Golden Temple in Amritsar is lit up for it. For Jains, Diwali marks the nirvana of Mahavira, and the Jain new year begins the next day. In Nepal, the five-day festival is Tihar. Diwali is also a public holiday in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname, and is celebrated wherever the Indian diaspora lives, from Leicester to New Jersey.

That matters for your message. "Happy Diwali" is right for almost anyone. For a Sikh friend, "Happy Bandi Chhor Divas" alongside it shows you know. For a Jain friend, a wish for the new year the day after is a nice touch.

What do you write in a Diwali message?

The person's name, one real detail, and a wish. "Happy Diwali, Maa and Papa. Every diya I light is a little bit of the home you made for us" works because it's about them, not about Diwali in general. The messages that get forwarded forty times are the ones about the triumph of light over darkness. They're true, and nobody reads them.

The usual things to wish for are health, happiness and prosperity, and a blessing from Goddess Lakshmi suits the evening of the puja. For friends, it's fine to skip the blessing and make them laugh: about the card party, the sweets or the diet that starts "after Bhai Dooj".

What do you send family?

Parents and elders like a blessing and a line that's clearly yours. Say आप in Hindi and Hinglish, and don't be afraid of a little sentiment: Diwali is the festival most people associate with home. Siblings are the opposite. The rangoli you weren't allowed to touch and the sweets you're still owed are the Diwali message. If you're sending one to the family group, one warm line from you is better than a picture everyone else has already posted.

What if you're away from home for Diwali?

Say so, and say what you're doing instead. "Different city, same diya on the window sill" tells your family you're keeping the festival where you are, which is what they want to hear. Students and people working abroad often miss Diwali because it rarely falls on a weekend where they live. A video call at puja time, planned in advance, means more than a message at midnight. If you're in a different time zone, check when the puja is back home and send your wish before it, not after.

What do you send clients and colleagues?

Something short, specific and a few days early. The corporate page has 50 wishes for clients, customers, employees, colleagues and the boss, plus notes on the email, the gift card and colleagues who don't celebrate. The main thing to remember: a client's inbox on Lakshmi Puja is full, and the message that thanks them for something real is the only one they'll read.

What's a green Diwali wish?

A wish that celebrates the lamps rather than the crackers. Air quality in north Indian cities is often at its worst in early November, and many families now light more diyas and burst fewer crackers, or none. A line like "more diyas and fewer crackers" is a nice way to say you're one of them, without lecturing anyone. Keep it light. Nobody wants a pollution report with their mithai.

Is it too late to send a Diwali wish?

Not for a few days. Diwali runs five days, so a wish on Govardhan Puja or Bhai Dooj is still inside the festival, and the Hindu new year that starts the day after Lakshmi Puja gives a late message something to wish for. Say it's late in a few words, without a long apology, and make the rest about them. "Sorry this is late. The diyas are out, but the wish still stands" does it. Happy Diwali, Shubh Deepawali or Diwali mubarak?

All three are right. "Happy Diwali" is the everyday greeting in English and Hinglish. "Shubh Deepawali" (शुभ दीपावली, auspicious Deepawali) is more traditional and suits elders and formal cards.
