Shayari

Shayari, for when a sentence won't carry it.

Some things don't fit in a message. Shayari is what Hindi and Urdu built for exactly that gap — two lines, one turn, and the thing you meant sitting in the space between them. Every couplet here is original.

The same feeling has a loud version and a quiet one. Most shayari that works is the quiet one.

What shayari actually is

Shayari is poetry in Urdu and Hindi — most often quoted as a single sher, the two-line unit that can stand alone. That standalone quality is why it survived the move to phones so well. A ghazal is a sequence of shers held together by a shared rhyme and metre rather than by a continuous argument, which means any one of its couplets can be lifted out and still make complete sense. A nazm, by contrast, runs as one continuous poem and does not come apart the same way.

The vocabulary is worth knowing because people use it loosely and it matters. A sher is two lines. A ghazal is a set of them. A nazm is a single poem on one subject. A doha is the older Hindi couplet form — Kabir and Rahim wrote in it — and it is built to deliver a moral rather than a turn. What gets forwarded on WhatsApp is almost always a sher, whatever it is labelled.

The canon is Urdu and it is old. Mir Taqi Mir in the eighteenth century, Mirza Ghalib in the nineteenth, Allama Iqbal and Faiz Ahmed Faiz in the twentieth. You do not need to have read any of them to write or send a good couplet, but it is worth knowing they exist — half of what circulates online misattributed to Ghalib is not his, and the real thing is better than the imitation.

Why people reach for it instead of just saying the thing

There is a practical answer and an honest one. The practical answer is that shayari is compressed: two lines carry what a paragraph would, which is why it fits a status, a caption or a message you do not want to be a whole conversation.

The honest answer is deniability. A shayari lets you say something to a specific person while appearing to say it to nobody. Put it on a status and the person it is for knows, everyone else reads a nice couplet, and you have not had to be direct or risk an answer. Half the shayari posted in India on any given evening is doing exactly this, and it is a genuinely useful social device rather than a cowardly one — some things are better said at an angle.

That also tells you when not to use it. If you owe someone an apology or an explanation, a couplet is a dodge and they will read it as one. Send prose. Shayari is for feeling, not for accountability.

Where these actually get used

  • WhatsApp status. The single biggest use. Two lines, up for 24 hours, aimed at one person and visible to two hundred. Keep it to a sher — a full ghazal in a status is nobody's evening.
  • Instagram captions. Devanagari renders fine everywhere and reads more striking than Roman transliteration. The one thing to check is that your line break survives the app's editor.
  • Sent directly. Riskier and better. A couplet sent to one person is unambiguous in a way a status is not, and that is the point of sending it.
  • In a message with your own words. The strongest version. One couplet, then one plain sentence of your own underneath. The shayari carries the feeling, your sentence carries the fact that you meant it.

A note on where these came from

Every couplet on this site is original. We do not reproduce Ghalib, Mir, Faiz or Iqbal, for two reasons. The twentieth-century poets are in copyright, and republishing them is not ours to do. And the older ones are already on ten thousand pages — a site that copies them competes on nothing except which copy Google happened to find first.

So the register here is modern conversational Hindustani rather than the Persian-heavy classical one. It is meant to sound like someone under thirty wrote it, because someone under thirty is going to send it. Where a couplet is in Roman script it is because that is how the people who use it actually type, not because we could not set Devanagari.

The collections below split by feeling. Start with the one you are in.

How to

How a sher is actually built

Two lines, and everything depends on what the second one does to the first.

1

The first line sets a claim

It states something plainly — a situation, a complaint, a small fact. On its own it is not interesting, and it is not supposed to be.

2

The second line turns it

This is the whole form. The turn can be a reversal, a consequence, or a detail that recasts the first line entirely. If the second line only agrees with the first, you have written a sentence in two parts, not a sher.

3

The rhyme carries the landing

The qafiya is the rhyming word and the radif is the phrase repeated after it. Get those into the ending and the couplet closes audibly, which is why shayari is remembered after one reading and prose isn't.

Questions

Shayari questions

What is shayari?

Poetry in Urdu and Hindi, usually quoted two lines at a time. That two-line unit is called a sher, and it is written to stand alone — which is why shayari moved onto phones more naturally than almost any other poetic form.

What is the difference between shayari, ghazal and nazm?

Shayari is the general word for the poetry. A ghazal is a set of couplets sharing a rhyme and metre but not a single continuous argument, so any one couplet can be quoted on its own. A nazm runs as one poem on one subject and does not come apart that way. Nearly everything forwarded on WhatsApp is a single sher from the first category.

What do qafiya and radif mean?

The qafiya is the rhyming word near the end of the line; the radif is the word or phrase repeated identically after it. Together they make the ending land audibly, which is why a good couplet sticks after one reading. A sher can work without a radif but almost never without a qafiya.

Is shayari Hindi or Urdu?

The tradition is Urdu, and the vocabulary leans Persian and Arabic. But spoken Hindi and Urdu are close enough that most shayari is understood by speakers of either, and it is written in both Devanagari and Nastaliq depending on the reader. The couplets here are in Devanagari and Roman, which is what Indian phones type in.

Who are the famous shayars I should know?

Mir Taqi Mir and Mirza Ghalib are the classical anchors, Allama Iqbal and Faiz Ahmed Faiz the twentieth-century ones. Worth reading properly rather than in screenshots — a great deal of what circulates online under Ghalib's name is not his, and the actual couplets are considerably better.

Can I use these for my WhatsApp status or Instagram caption?

Yes, that is what they are for, and no credit is needed. Each one copies as plain text with the line break kept, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Instagram and X without turning into a single run-on line.

Are these copied from somewhere?

No. Every couplet on this site is original. We deliberately do not reproduce named poets — the modern ones are in copyright, and the classical ones are already on thousands of identical pages.

How do I write my own shayari?

Get the two-line structure right first and worry about rhyme second. Line one states something plainly. Line two turns it — reverses it, or adds the detail that changes what line one meant. If your second line only agrees with the first, you have written a sentence with a break in it. The rhyme is what makes it memorable; the turn is what makes it a sher.
