What do you write in a birthday message?

One true detail and one warm line. That's most of it. The detail is something only you would know: the way they answer the phone, the food they always order, the thing they did for you this year. The warm line is what the detail means, said plainly. "Happy birthday to the only person who still asks if I've eaten" works because it's a real habit and a real compliment at once. A long message made of general words (amazing, special, wonderful) says less than a short one with a single specific thing in it.

How does the message change with who it's for?

Almost completely. A birthday wish for your mom is gratitude: for the lunch boxes, the late pickups, the worrying she pretends she doesn't do. Funny, heartfelt or short?

Match how you talk to the person the rest of the year. If your chat is memes and insults, a funny line will sound like you and a sudden paragraph of feelings might sound like a prank. If you're close and say so often, the heartfelt lines will land. Short is for the group chat, a story caption or someone you don't know well, when one clean line is kinder than a long one.

The best birthday messages often use two tones in a row: a joke to open, then one honest sentence to close. Every collection has filters for tone, so you can pick a funny one and a heartfelt one and put them together.

Why do people send birthday wishes at midnight?

In India especially, the 12 o'clock wish is a small competition and a big gesture. Being the first message someone sees on their birthday says you stayed up for them, or set an alarm, and friends and couples keep score. The midnight message can be short, since timing is the point, and the longer one can follow in the morning. Birthday wishes in Hindi and Hinglish

About 38 in every 100 messages here are in Hindi or Hinglish. Use the language your chats already run in. If you text your mom in Hinglish, a Hinglish wish will sound most like you; if you want something for a family group or an elder, Devanagari reads warmer and more respectful. What if you forgot the birthday?

Send it anyway, today, and don't write an essay about why it's late. A belated wish that owns the mistake in one line ("I'm late, and you deserved better, so here's a proper one") is better than silence, and far better than a long explanation. Then make it specific: a plan to meet, a call this evening, a gift on its way. Most people remember who wished them late much more kindly than who didn't wish at all.

A handwritten card is still the one people keep. Three or four sentences is plenty: the detail, a memory, and a wish for the year ahead.
