Why this particular wish has lasted
“Health, wealth and prosperity” is not a phrase anyone invented for a greeting card. It is the English rendering of a blessing structure that runs through Sanskrit, Urdu and half a dozen Indian languages — you ask for the body first, then the means, then the state that follows from having both. Say it in that order and it sounds right to almost anyone in India, whatever they speak at home.
That is also why it survives being sent by a person who barely knows you. A specific message needs a specific relationship behind it. A blessing does not — it works from a colleague, a client, a neighbour, a WhatsApp group you were added to in 2019. It asks for nothing and it cannot be misread.
The trade is obvious: it is not personal, and everyone can tell. So the rule on this page is the opposite of the rest of the site. Do not try to make a blessing sound like you. Send it clean, and if you want it to land, add one ordinary sentence of your own underneath — “hope the knee is behaving” does more than any amount of rewording the blessing itself.
Who this is actually for
- Elders in the family. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, your friend's parents. The formal register is the point — an over-casual wish to someone twenty years older reads as careless, not as warm.
- Your boss, or anyone senior at work. Keep it to two lines and skip the emoji. A blessing is one of the few birthday messages that is safe to send up the hierarchy.
- A large WhatsApp group. Where you are one of forty people wishing the same person and nobody expects a memory.
- Anyone you are wishing in Hindi. The Devanagari blessings below are the ones that get forwarded. If you are not sure of the script, send the Hindi and the English together — nobody has ever minded.
About the Hindi blessings
Two of the lines on this page are ones people search for directly, by their first few words rather than by what they mean. “Chand taaron ka noor aap par barse” — may the light of the moon and stars fall on you — and “dene wala har khushi de aapko” — may the One who gives, give you every happiness. Both have been circulating on Indian phones since SMS cost a rupee, and neither has a known author, which is usually the sign that a line has properly entered the language.
They are written here in Devanagari rather than Roman transliteration, because that is how they read best and how they paste cleanly into WhatsApp. If the person you are sending to reads Hindi comfortably, send the script. If you are not sure, send it anyway — every Indian phone renders Devanagari, and nobody has ever been annoyed to receive a blessing they had to squint at.
Picking one in about ten seconds
- Decide the distance. Family elder or close colleague, take a warm one. Client or someone senior you have met twice, take a formal one — they are tagged.
- Decide the length. One line for a group chat where thirty people are already typing. Three or four for a message that will be read properly.
- Add your own sentence. Not to the blessing — after it. One line about them, however small. That is the entire difference between a wish and a forward.
If none of these fit, the birthday pillar has hundreds more sorted by relationship and tone, and the guide below is the three-move version of writing your own — which, for anyone you actually know, still beats every message on this page.

Before you send it
What does “health, wealth and prosperity” actually mean in a birthday wish?
It is a three-part blessing borrowed from Indian devotional phrasing: good health first, the means to live well second, and prosperity — the settled state that follows from having both — third. The order is not decorative. Ask for prosperity before health and it lands as a wish about money, which is not what anyone means.
Is this a religious wish? Can I send it to someone of another faith?
The structure comes from devotional language but the wish itself is not tied to a religion, and it is sent freely across Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian and Jain families in India. If you want to be careful, the lines here that say “may this year bring you” rather than naming God do the same job with no assumption attached.
What is the meaning of “chand taaron ka noor aap par barse”?
“May the light of the moon and stars rain down on you.” Noor means light in the sense of radiance or blessing rather than illumination, and barse is the verb for rain — so the image is of blessing falling on someone the way rain does. It is one of the most forwarded birthday couplets in Hindi and has no known author.
Can I send a formal birthday blessing to my boss?
Yes, and it is one of the few birthday messages that is genuinely safe to send upward. Keep it to two lines, use their name or title, skip the emoji, and do not add a personal memory unless you would say it out loud in the office.
Should I send the Hindi or the English version?
Send Hindi if they use it in messages with you. Send both if you are unsure — the Devanagari line first, the English underneath. It reads as effort rather than hedging, and it means the wish works whoever ends up reading it over their shoulder.
Is it rude to send the same blessing to several people?
No. That is what a blessing is for, and unlike a personal message it does not lose anything by being repeated. What does help is changing one thing each time — the name, or one line of your own at the end.
