How do I change my font on Discord?
You can't change Discord's font itself, but you can make your text look different in two ways. In messages, Discord has built-in formatting: wrap words in symbols like **this** and Discord shows them in bold. In names and bios, formatting doesn't work, so people use Unicode fonts instead: letters like 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 or 𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓲𝓿𝓮 that are really different characters, which Discord shows as they are. What formatting does Discord support in messages?
Discord uses a version of Markdown. These are the codes that work in any message or channel, and each one is a row in the generator above:
- Bold. Two asterisks on each side: **text**.
- Italic. One asterisk or one underscore on each side: *text* or _text_.
- Bold italic. Three asterisks: ***text***.
- Underline. Two underscores: __text__. Combine with asterisks for underlined bold, __**text**__.
- Strikethrough. Two tildes: ~~text~~.
- Spoiler. Two vertical bars: ||text||. The text stays hidden until someone clicks it.
- Inline code. One backtick: `text`. Shows in a grey box in a fixed-width font. Three backticks on their own lines make a full code block.
- Headings. A hash and a space at the start of a line: # big, ## medium, ### small.
- Subtext. A hyphen, a hash and a space at the start of a line: -# text. Shows small and grey, handy for footnotes.
- Quote. A greater-than sign and a space: > text. Use >>> to quote everything after it.
Headings, subtext and quotes only work at the very start of a line. The rest work anywhere in a sentence and can be combined.
How do I get a fancy font in my Discord name?
Copy a font row from the generator and paste it into your display name. Open User Settings, go to your profile, and edit the display name field. For a name that only shows in one server, use the server nickname instead: open the server's menu and choose Edit Server Profile. Both fields accept Unicode fonts, and both have a 32-character limit.
Your username is different. Since Discord's 2023 username change, usernames can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and full stops, so fancy fonts are rejected there. The display name is the one people see in chat anyway.

- Display name and server nickname. Unicode fonts only. Formatting codes show as literal asterisks.
- About Me. Unicode fonts, which is how many profiles get their styled bio lines.

- Username. Neither. Plain lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and full stops only.
Formatting codes are for messages. Unicode fonts are for names, bios and anywhere formatting doesn't reach.
Which fancy fonts look best on Discord?
Bold sans (𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲) and bold italic are the easiest to read in the member list, where names are small. Cursive and gothic stand out more but get hard to read at that size, so they suit a short name. Small caps (ɴᴀᴍᴇ) is the quiet option that still looks deliberate. Discord's search and mentions work with the characters you actually typed. A name in a Unicode font is harder for friends to find or @mention, because they'd have to type the same fancy characters. If people need to find you, keep a plain version of your name somewhere, like the start of your nickname.
