What is a ship name?
A ship name is one name made by blending two people's names, like Brangelina for Brad and Angelina. The word comes from relationship. Fans online started "shipping" the couples they wanted to see together, and the blended name became shorthand for the pair. Couple name, ship name and name combination all mean the same thing, so a couple name generator, a ship name maker and a ship name generator all do the same job.
It works for real couples and made-up ones. People make them for their own relationship, for friends they want to tease, for characters in a show or a book, and for celebrity pairs. It doesn't have to be romantic either. Ship names for couples are the most common, but best friends, siblings and group chats get them too.
How does the couple name generator combine two names?
It tries every way of joining the start of one name to the end of the other, then ranks the results by how they sound. Two six-letter names give 36 possible cuts in each order. Most of them are unsayable, so it drops any blend with three consonants or three vowels in a row at the join, and any blend where one person has almost vanished.
Four things move a blend up the list. A letter both names share at the join, which is the trick behind Brangelina: Brad hands over to Angelina on the letter a. A join that switches between a consonant and a vowel. A fair share of each name. And a length close to the average of the two names. The best blend from each order is always kept near the top, so one order can never push the other off the list.
What are some famous ship names?
Brangelina, Bennifer, Kimye and Traylor are the ones most people know, and this generator makes all four.
- Brangelina. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The Br of Brad, then all of Angelina. The a they share is the hinge.
- Bennifer. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. The Be of Ben, then Jennifer from its double n. Both names have an n at that spot, so the handover is hard to see.
- Kimye. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. All of Kim and the last two letters of Kanye. It works because Kim is short.
- Traylor. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. The Tr of Travis, then Taylor from the a onwards.
Between them they show the three patterns nearly every good ship name follows. The start of one name plus most of the other, like Brangelina and Traylor. A shared letter where the names meet, like Bennifer. And a short name kept whole with the end of the other, like Kimye.
Which ship name should you pick?
Pick the one you can say out loud without having to explain it. The top pick is the generator's best guess, but the right one is the one that sounds like the two of you.
- Say it out loud. If you stumble over it, everyone else will too.
- Check both orders. Priya and Arjun give Prijun one way round and Ariya the other. They feel like different couples.
- Can both people find themselves in it? A blend that's nearly all one name reads as that person plus a suffix.
- Read it as a word. Some blends spell something you didn't mean. The generator filters out the obvious ones, but give it a quick read anyway.
- Check the handle. If it's for a shared Instagram or TikTok, search for it first. Short blends are often taken, and an underscore or your anniversary year fixes that.
Can you make a ship name for three people?
Yes. Tap Add a third name and the generator blends all three, trying all six orders. Mia, Leo and Zara give Miareo, Lemiara and Zamileo, for example. Three-name blends run longer, and one person always ends up with the smallest share, so read the whole list before settling. They suit best-friend trios, group chats and a shared playlist.
What makes a good husband and wife name combination?
A good husband and wife name combination keeps a piece of both names that people will recognise, like Ranjali for Rahul and Anjali. In India a mixed couple name turns up on wedding hashtags, in mehndi designs, on a shared Instagram account and sometimes on the nameplate of a new home. Rahul and Anjali also give Rahuli and Anjahul. Priya and Arjun give Ariya and Prijun.
Type Hindi names the way you'd spell them in English letters, since that's how they'll appear on a hashtag or a card. The generator's rules about how a join sounds are written for the Latin alphabet. Names typed in Devanagari still blend, but the ranking is rougher.
Is a name combiner the same thing?
Mostly, yes. A name combiner blends any two names, and a ship name generator is a name combiner aimed at couples. The same method works for:
- A baby name from both parents. Treat these as a starting point. A few blends sound like real names, like Jamelia from Jake and Amelia. Most don't.
- A pet's name, from the two people who share it.
- A channel, team or small business, named after its two founders.
- A joint gamer tag for a duo that always queues together.
How do you make a ship name stand out in a bio?
Style it. The rows under the list show your top blend in cursive, bold, with sparkles and framed with hearts, so Ariya becomes ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ช or โฅ Ariya โฅ, ready to copy. These are Unicode letters, not a font, so they paste into Instagram, WhatsApp and most other apps. The font generator has dozens more styles if none of these fit.
Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. The generator runs in your browser, and the names never leave your device.
