The midnight text

New Year's Eve is 31 December, and 2027 begins at midnight. For the people closest to you, being the first message of their year is the whole point, the same competition as the 12 o'clock birthday wish. Keep it short, because at midnight they'll read it with one eye on the fireworks: "It's midnight, and you're the first person I wanted to say it to" is plenty. Type it before midnight and send it on the stroke of twelve, because networks can be slow in the first minutes of the year.

What do you write in a New Year message?

One look back and one look forward. Thank the person for something from the year that's ending, then wish them something specific for the one that's starting. "Thank you for every laugh last year. Let's go again" works because it does both in nine words. Avoid the list of generic wishes (health, wealth, happiness, success): it reads as a forward even when you typed it yourself.

The messages on this page don't name the year on purpose, so they read right whenever you send them. Add it yourself if you like; "Happy New Year" with the year on the end is how most people write it in a caption.

For family and a partner

Parents and elders like a blessing and a thank-you: good health, peace of mind, and a line about what they gave you last year. A family group chat wants one warm message everyone can reply to. For a partner, the New Year is a natural moment to say what you want the next year to hold for the two of you, which is more romantic than any quote.

For friends

Friends get the jokes, about resolutions, the group chat and the trip you've been planning since college, and one honest line about why the year was better with them in it. If there's a friend you drifted from last year, New Year is the easiest excuse there is to get back in touch: a short, warm message needs no explanation.

New Year messages for clients and coworkers

Thank clients for the year and say you're looking forward to the next one. A message in the last week of December or the first working days of January both work; the first week of January has the advantage that people are back and reading. For a team, thank them for something specific and wish them a calm start. Keep it short, and skip the resolutions jokes unless you know the person well.

Wishing someone in another time zone

Midnight arrives at different times, which gives you two chances. New Year reaches India ten and a half hours before New York and five and a half before London. Send your wish at their midnight, not yours, if being first matters to them; or send it at yours and tell them they're next. The long-distance page has more for the everyday version of that gap.

Resolutions, in a message

The funniest New Year texts are about resolutions nobody expects to keep: the gym, the early mornings, the phone at dinner. Self-mockery works best ("two out of three isn't bad"), and teasing a friend about last year's resolution is fair game if they started it. For a partner or a close friend, a shared resolution is a lovely message in disguise: "let's take that trip this year" or "more Sunday lunches with your parents" is a wish, a plan and a small promise at once. Keep resolutions out of messages to colleagues and anyone who might hear a joke about their weight or their job as a comment on it.

When the last year was hard

Don't pretend it wasn't. A New Year message to someone who lost a job, a person or their health this year can say so gently: "Last year was a lot. You got through it, and I'm proud of you." A wish for a gentle year means more to them than a cheerful one, and they will remember who noticed.

New Year wishes in Hindi and Hinglish

"नव वर्ष की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ" is the formal wish, good for elders and family groups, and "नया साल मुबारक" is the everyday one. In Hinglish, "Naya saal mubarak!" works for almost anyone, and friends will appreciate something cheekier. India also celebrates regional new years through the spring, among them Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Baisakhi, Puthandu and Vishu, each with its own greetings.

Is it too late to say Happy New Year?

Not in the first week or so. People keep saying it to colleagues and friends they see for the first time well into January. A belated wish that jokes about being late ("Still counts, right?") is perfectly normal, and a few are included above.
