What is a gothic font?
A gothic font is a style of lettering based on blackletter, the heavy, angular handwriting used across Europe from about the 12th century. It's the look of old Bibles, newspaper mastheads, diplomas and tattoo lettering. In English it's usually called Old English text, and in German printing it's called Fraktur, which is where the letters on this page come from.
The text this generator makes isn't a font file. It's a set of Unicode characters called Mathematical Fraktur, added so mathematicians could write symbols like ๐ค in equations. Because they're characters rather than a font, they keep their gothic shape when you paste them into Instagram, TikTok, Discord or a game, where you can't pick a font at all.
Is Old English font the same as gothic?
Yes, for copy-and-paste purposes. "Gothic font", "Old English font", "blackletter" and "Fraktur" all describe the same family of lettering, and every copy-and-paste generator gives you the same Unicode Fraktur characters for all four. Type designers split blackletter into several sub-styles (Textura, Rotunda, Schwabacher and Fraktur), but that distinction only matters when you're choosing a real font for print.
"Gothic" also means something different in web design, which causes confusion. There, a gothic font is a plain sans-serif like Century Gothic, the opposite of blackletter. If someone asks for gothic letters for a name or a bio, they almost always mean the Old English look on this page.
Which gothic style should I pick?
- Plain (๐๐ฌ๐ฑ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ ). Lighter and easier to read. Best for a longer bio line or a caption.
- Bold (๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐). Heavier and closer to tattoo lettering. Best for a single name or word that needs to stand out.
- Framed. Bold or plain gothic inside ๊งเผบ เผป๊ง, crowns, swords or crosses. The format used for Free Fire, BGMI and Discord names, where the frame marks the name as deliberate rather than random symbols.
Gothic capitals are the hardest letters to read in any style. A name in all capitals, like ๐๐โ๐, can look like a pattern rather than a word. Capitalise the first letter only and let the lowercase carry it.
Why do a few gothic capitals look different?
Five plain capitals, C, H, I, R and Z, come from a different part of Unicode than the rest. They were added years earlier as individual symbols (โญ, โ, โ, โ, โจ), so the Fraktur alphabet has permanent gaps where they would be. This generator fills the gaps with those older characters, which is correct, but some fonts draw them in a slightly different weight from their neighbours. The bold style has no gaps, so if a name looks uneven in plain, switch to bold.

Can I use this for a tattoo design?
As a preview, yes. It's a quick way to see how a name or a word looks in blackletter before you talk to an artist. For the tattoo itself, give your artist the word rather than a screenshot. A tattoo artist draws blackletter by hand or from a proper typeface, which has far more detail, spacing control and variation than these characters can carry.
Screen readers struggle with gothic characters, which they may read out as "mathematical fraktur capital D" letter by letter. Keep them for names and decoration, and write anything people need to read in plain text.
