You're not my best friend because you're the best. You're my best friend because nobody else applied.
Funny friendship messages, for roasting the people you love.
For a lot of friendships, teasing is the affection. These are written to be funny at your friend rather than about friendship in general — which is the difference between a joke and a forward.

Short enough to screenshot. These are the ones that end up on a story.

Why insulting your friends reads as affection
A roast only works if it is inaccurate in a way that proves accuracy. Calling a stranger unreliable is rude; calling your friend unreliable when you have both spent nine years waiting for them outside cinemas is a shared reference disguised as an insult. The joke is not the content — it is the fact that only you could have made it.
That is also why generic funny messages fail so badly with friends. "Friends are like stars, you can't always see them but they're always there" is a sentence written for nobody. "You once ate my leftovers and asked if I'd finished them" is a sentence written for one person, and that person will screenshot it.
Where the line is
There is one, and it moves per friendship, but the general shape is reliable: roast the choices, not the circumstances. Their terrible haircut, their driving, their inability to read a message before replying — all fair, because they chose those. Their job situation, their family, their weight, their relationship — usually not, because they mostly did not.
- Punch at the shared history, not the sore spot. The best roasts reference something you both remember fondly. If you have to think about whether it will hurt, it will.
- Not in a group they didn't choose. A joke that works one-to-one can land very differently with twenty people watching, especially if some of them do not have the context.
- Follow a hard one with something true. One line of sincerity after a roast is the standard move for a reason. It converts the joke into a compliment retroactively.
- Never in writing what you wouldn't say out loud. Text has no tone and no face. Sarcasm that would obviously be affectionate in person can read completely flat on a screen.
Roasting in Hinglish
Hinglish is unusually good at this, and it is not an accident. Switching mid-sentence between Hindi and English gives you two registers to play off — the Hindi carries the warmth, the English carries the punchline, and the switch itself is part of the timing. "Tu kabhi mat badalna. Improve toh kar sakta hai, par badalna mat" does not survive translation, because the joke lives in the gear change.
So send these in the script your chat already runs in. A perfectly written Devanagari roast dropped into a Roman-script conversation reads as though you looked it up, which is the one thing a joke cannot survive.
For Friendship Day specifically
On the first Sunday of August everyone in India receives roughly forty identical sincere forwards. A funny one is the only kind that stands out, because nobody forwards a joke that is specific enough to be about one person — which means yours arrives as the only message that was actually written.
If you want the sincere version instead, the friendship pillar has all 100 messages and the sincere half is considerably larger. Both work; the funny one just needs less courage.

Before you send it
What is a good funny message to send a friend?
One that references something only the two of you would recognise. A generic joke about friendship is a forward; a joke about the time they ate your leftovers is a message. The specificity is what makes it funny, not the wording.
How far can you go when roasting a friend?
The reliable rule is roast the choices, not the circumstances. Their haircut, their driving and their reply speed are fair game because they chose them. Their job, family, weight or relationship usually are not. If you have to weigh whether it will sting, it will.
Are these funny friendship messages okay to send in a group chat?
The group-chat tagged ones are written for it. Be more careful with the sharper roasts — a line that works one-to-one lands differently with twenty people watching, some of whom won't have the context that makes it affectionate.
Do you have funny friendship messages in Hindi?
Yes, in both Devanagari and Roman-script Hinglish. Hinglish is particularly good for this because switching between the two languages mid-sentence gives you the timing — the Hindi carries the warmth and the English carries the punchline.
Is a funny message okay for Friendship Day?
It is arguably the better choice. Everyone receives dozens of identical sincere forwards that day, and nobody forwards a joke that is specific enough to be about one person — so a funny one is often the only message that reads as actually written.
