What to text someone fasting on Karva Chauth

One message in the morning, one near moonrise, and no jokes about hunger. What to write as a husband, a wife or a friend.

Send one message in the morning that shows you know what today is, and one near moonrise that says you're waiting to break the fast with them. Leave out jokes about hunger and thirst unless she makes them first.

In 2026, Karva Chauth is on Thursday 29 October. It falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik, so the date changes each year.

What the day is

Married women, mostly in North and West India, fast from before sunrise until the moon rises. Traditionally that means no food and no water. The fast opens with a pre-dawn meal called sargi, which in Punjab often comes from the mother-in-law. It ends when the moon is up: she looks at it through a sieve, then at her husband, and he gives her the first sip of water.

The moon rises late in the evening and at a different time in each city, so check the time for yours.

From a husband

Her day is hard, so what you do matters more than what you write. Be home before the moon, have water ready, and cover the evening so she doesn't have to. Then the messages can be short.

Happy Karva Chauth. I know what today takes. I'll be home before the moon, and I'll have everything ready.
Nearly there. I'm watching the sky, and the water's on the table.

From a wife

A message to your husband can be about the day and the evening, not about the fast. "Counting the hours. Come home hungry" is plenty. If you're fasting for someone else, a message on the morning of the day says you're thinking of them.

From a friend or family member

Keep it light and don't mention food. "Happy Karva Chauth, hope the day is a gentle one" works. Don't tell her to have just a sip of water or a snack. She has chosen how to do it, and the moon isn't far off.

What to leave out

  • Jokes about her hunger. She's the one living it, and by afternoon it isn't funny.
  • Guilt. "You're doing all this for me?" asks for reassurance on a day she's tired. Say thank you and move on.
  • Debate. Whether people should fast is a fair argument for another day, not that day's message.

If you don't fast, or she doesn't

Plenty of couples treat the day differently, and neither choice needs a justification. A message can still say you're thinking of her. For someone who isn't fasting, a plain "Happy Karva Chauth" and a dinner plan is enough.
